Here is a fresh Vesti TV report on Middle Eastern refugees travelling to Finland via Kandalaksha:

It is in Russian but the key points are:

more >> on Mid-eastern refugees in Kandalaksha. Fame in Russia and Finland!

refugeesNoticed an article on the flow of Eastern (Syrian, Afghan, North African etc.) refugees trying to get into Finland via Kandalaksha on the site of, a major Federal-level monthly. We are becoming famous! The only sad thing is that I’ve had not a single request to act as a “guide” – a job that pays, according to Snob, $1500 per trip. Only a couple of accommodation request from people with Middle Eastern sounding names that didn’t show up anyway.

About 100 “Syrian” refugees are said to be temporarily housed in Kandalaksha

finland-borderRumours are that they are staying at the Polar Star hotel. About 5-6 of them manage to get to Finland through the Salla crossing  control point per day using beat up old cars as transportation instead of bicycles, now banned by the Finnish side. Another 10 or so are sent back home from Russia after being processed by the Kandalaksha court. Jounalists interested in covering this subject can now come to Kandalaksha instead of Pechenga.

A wolf is said to have been once again seen on Kandalaksha streets, occasionally snacking on dogs. Here is one of the recent records of the old limping beast that’s been the talk of the town since last year at least. The latest words is that, instead of eating dogs, he has joined a group of strays.

Garbage sorting line to be installed at the Kandalaksha dump

garbageI’ve overheard a report to the effect that the local authorities in charge of garbage collection and disposal have acquired a garbage-sorting line and are about to install it at the local dump.

But no, there is no hint at introducing separation at the garbage dumpster stage to be done by the residents.

New laws making garbage sorting a requirement have apparently been introduced. Lots of $$ are waiting for someone who’ll come here with the knowledge and technology to accomplish this.

Another grenade found yesterday in Kandalaksha

Since my September 18 2014 note on a grenade found by the garbage dump on Spekova street has attracted an unprecidented number of views (500+), here I’ll treat you for another similar story.

Yesterday, an anti-tank grenade was found and safely de-activated by the Industrial Colledge at Spekova 50.

Kandalaksha Aluminum Smelter planning to cut production

aluminum-smelterThere are persistent rumours that the aluminum smelter, one of the pillars of local economy, is about to cut production by 200 th. tons per year in December 2015.

(A strange figure given that the plant’s output is no more than 70 th. tons per year.)

The reason is said to be low price for aluminum that dropped to $1600USA, or 27%, since the beginning of 2015, which makes producing aluminum a losing business to half of the industry’s facilities.

Water quality in Kandalaksha district said to be OK reports that Kandalaksha and area water is safe before it enters the distribution system, and if I correctly understood the story, it remains borderline acceptable when delivered to households through dirty rotten pipes.

Still, the official advice is to boil water before drinking it.

My own nose tends to be skeptical about this advice, and I recommend you get your water from one of several springs around the city.
