A video of Kandalaksha and area

Found on the VK page of Yura Nikitenko, a Kandalaksha photographer and rap singer.

Warning: the image of the place presented in the video somehow looks better than ground-level reality, where all the trash and tack and grot can’t be easily ignored. But with the end of the tourist season approaching I cannot miss this opportunity to promote tourism, even by somewhat misleading methods.

Northern Character Film and TV Festival Nov. 24-26, Murmansk

northern-character-festival

The event will feature films united around the northern theme. At least in the past all films shown had English subtitles, and the festival’s site has an English version, which gives a reason to expect that the event will be accessible to the international traveler. After the Murmansk show the festival will tour other Murmansk region cities, including Kandalaksha.

From 1935 to the beginning of the 1990s the Murmansk Biological Station (from 1958 the Biological Station of the Murmansk Sea Biology Institute) was active there. The purmanent population of the village was about 600, which included both scientists and technical personnel from among the locals. Presently the biological station is abandoned, and about 10 permanently live there. Some biologists visit the station in the summer. more >>

Another abandoned settlement near the Prolivy train stop

prolivy-1Recently I’ve stumbled into yet another abandoned military settlement by the no, not quite a “station” but more of a mere train stop called Prolivy (“Straights”) near the village of Beloye More.

Three or four relatively recently (in 2003 according to one local I met there) deserted 4 or 5 story buildings, plus smaller service buildings.

teriberka-2I wrote about it before, and here I’d like to confirm that it is indeed happening in two weeks.

And Alexandra personally spoke with local border guards who confirmed that there are no restrictions to foreigner access to Teriberka.

Frozen Kolvitsa waterfall in winter

kolvitsa-waterfall-1

This photo is by Gennady Alexandrov. The rest is by Alexandra.

Yesterday my mate Alexandra took me to Kolvitsa to see one of local natural attractions, the waterfall on the Kolvitsa river. Although I am at a bit of a loss as to the point of dragging one’s ass through two miles of snow to see some bubbling water framed by ice, I am, after all, in the tourism business, so I put up but minimal resistance and ended up seeing the views I’m about to share.
