In all these years I’ve only had one client who went through it in the relatively liberal 2000s, and it took him a year of full-time work, and by the time he got his permanent residence he came to hate the country and returned to the States in disgust with Russia. Still, I get this question once in a while, and reading this article may be a good place to start.

  1. I thought if you applied for Russian citizenship they gave it right to you. Then they took all your money, beat you up, and fed you to the polar bears

    Maxim Dlugy (born January 29, 1966) is a chess Grandmaster. He emigrated to America as a young boy and first came to notice in 1984 when he finished 3rd in the U.S. Chess Championship. He was 2nd= in New York 1985, 2nd= in Clichy 1986–87 and 3rd= in the 1987 U.S. Chess Championship.

    Max never renounced his Russian citizenship so when plane he was on made a stop in Moscow. The oligarchs grabbed him and try to break him.
    Dlugy was charged with attempting to defraud a Perm metals plant of $9 million and of embezzling 48,000 rubles ($1,800), which he had written off as entertainment expenses. When it turned out that the prosecutor had no hard evidence against Dlugy, Dlugy was eventually acquitted and set free,
    Even the country’s top prison official has admitted that the authorities keep too many innocent people in custody.
