Camp “Medvezhy Ugol” in Krasnoborsky, on Lake Murmozero, 20km south from Pudozh. I haven’t inspected this one myself but judging from the number of billboards the “Bear Corner” guesthouse a major center of tourism. Don’t worry,”major” has a very different meaning in Karelia than in gigantomaniac Central Russia. Medvezhy Ugol appears to be more of a camp than a guesthouse, and clients are probably the usual set of Russian “nature lovers” with their endless fishing and hunting stories and shashlyk and vodka and banya. Recommended to the immersion enthusiasts. The number is +7 921 701 4702. No English but people in the area tend to be patient and understanding and resourceful enough to understand you regardless.
A guesthouse in the village of Gakugsa (pop. ~140), 30km south from Pudozh. It is run by Natalia, +7 926 015 130, and Alexey, +7 921 604 3764. 600 roubles ($20) per person per night. Basic countryside facilities. Local tours. No experience with foreign travellers but the owners say that the local English teacher can be asked to assist.
NOTE THAT IN KARELIA THERE ARE LOTS OF OFFERS OF THIS SORT. I PERSONALLY WOULD NOT BOTHER RESERVING ANYTHING IN ADVANCE UNLESS I WAS LOOKING FOR SOMETHING SPECIAL.
