The road ends in Kuzomen. This trip by our friend and colleague, local history expert Gennady Alexandrov, was beyond any semblance of a road, which makes me want to share it with you.

“The White Sea, now the only inland sea in Russia, is a semiclosed basin connected with the Barents Sea through Gorlo and Voronka. Voronka and the Mezen Bay are also assigned to the White Sea. The geographic bound ary of the White and Barents seas passes along the line Svyatoi Nos Cape – Kanin Nos Cape. Throughout the ages the White Sea have played an important role in economy of the North and North West of Russia. Many important events and stages in formation of Russia as a sea-power are associated with the White Sea”.
The new film, entitled “This Cold North”, was shot by our friend and colleague, a biologist, photographer, and local history expert Gennady Alexandrov back in 1996 but just was released now. The focus of it is the Kandalaksha Nature Reserve..

Yesterday my mate Alexandra took me to Kolvitsa to see one of local natural attractions, the waterfall on the Kolvitsa river. Although I am at a bit of a loss as to the point of dragging one’s ass through two miles of snow to see some bubbling water framed by ice, I am, after all, in the tourism business, so I put up but minimal resistance and ended up seeing the views I’m about to share. An exhibition to present the Murmansk region and other arctic areas of Russia is happening in Murmansk from Nov. 17 to 19. There will be Murmansk region municipalities, joint booths of Russian arctic areas and foreign countries, and presentations by major industrial enterprises active in the Arctic.
Elena Tikhonova, the minister of economic development of the Murmansk region, says that the main aim of the exhibition is to help both residents and guests of the region understand the uniqueness and potential of each of the region’s municipalities, and to form a favourable investement image of the area among entrepreneurs and investors.
The project is intended to present business projects, active or potential, and to expose the infrastructure being developed in the Arctic zone of Russia and in the Murmansk region specifically. Its aim is to provide a platform for a dialogue to develop and discuss social and economic developmenet of the Arctic zone, to share the potential of municipalities to develop internal tourism, and to expand local history knowledge of the region’s residents.
The event’s organizers hope that the exhibition will be one of key events during the Murmansk International Business Week, and will be noticed by both residents and guests of the region.
