Three days ago I saw this spring’s first mosquito. Today we noticed a large number of black specks in the snow bank along the so-called “health trail” in the city park, some of which were moving and even jumping. These turned out to be snow fleas (Hypogastrura nivicola), all alive and kicking, quite literally, with their springy tails. Another piece of evidence spring is near. And no, they don’t bite, feeding on rotting leaves instead of blood.
