Kandalaksha is where you can meet wild Greenland seals(Pagophilus groenlandicus)right in the city. Six to eight week old baby seals come to the Kandalaksha bay shore at the end of April and hang around till the middle or end of June.
In their search for food young seals enter the Niva Hydroelectric Station canal within city limits. Here they can be hand fed, which was quite popular till it was discovered that seals who got into the habit have very little chance of survival, and at present feeding them is frowned on.
